บทนำ
ในค่ำคืนที่พลุกพล่านไปด้วยผู้คนในเมืองใหญ่ เสียงรถมากมายที่สัญจรไปมาอย่างคับคั่ง ในยามราตรีเช่นนี้เหมาะแก่การให้ร่างกายได้พักผ่อน แต่ไม่ใช้กับเมืองใหญ่แห่งนี้ ที่ได้ชื่อว่า "เมืองที่ไม่เคยหลับไหล" แต่หารู้ไม่ คำว่า 'ไม่เคยหลับไหล' สามารถสะท้อนตัวตนของคนคนหนึ่งได้เปนอย่างดี
ณ คฤหาสน์หลังหนึ่งซึ่งตั้งอยู่แถบชานเมือง มีแสงไฟสว่างสาดส่องออกมาทำให้เห็นตัวบ้านได้เป็นอย่างดี สภาพบ้านภายนอกบ่งบอกถึงอายุของบ้านหลังนี้ว่าเก่าแก่แค่ไหน ไม่ใช้ว่าดูโทรงเหมือนปราสาทผีสิงแต่งดงามหาดูที่ไหนไม่ได้ มันพร้อมที่จะสกดสายตาทุกคู่ที่มองมัน รั้วบ้านทำจากเหล็กกล้าที่หาได้ยากและราคาแพงในขณะนี้ ตัวบ้านทำจากปูนสไตย์คลาสสิกสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ลึกเข้าไปในตัวบ้านจะพบกับห้องโถงขนาดใหญ่ และตรงเข้าไปอีกจะพบกับบันไดซึ่งทอดยาวขึ้นไปด้านบนและแยกออกเป็นสองทาง ชั้นบนจะเป็นส่วนของห้องนอนและที่พักสำหรับแขกผู้มาเยือน
แกร็ก!!!!! เสียงลูกบิดประตูดังขึ้นจากห้องทางฝั่งซ้ายในสุด พร้อมกับที่ชายวัยกลางคนค่อยๆดันประตูให้เปิดออกที่ละน้อยๆเหมือนกลัวเจ้าของห้องจะรู้ตัว ประตูไม้แกะสลักงดงามถูกเปิดจนสุด ทำให้พบกับความมืดมิดภายในห้อง แสงจันทร์ที่ส่องเข้ามาทางหน้าต่างสะท้อนกับโน๊ตกระดาษแผ่นเล็กๆ ที่ถูกวางทิ้งไวอย่างจงใจเหมือนรู้ว่าจะมีคนเข้ามาในห้องแห่งนี้ ชายวัยกลางคนไม่รีรอเดินเข้าไปหยุดยืนอยู่ตรงโน๊ตแผ่นนั้น แล้วหยิบมันขึ้นมาอ่าน ในโน๊ตมีประโยคเขียนไว้สั้นๆ
ชายวัยกลางคนถอนหายใจออกมาเฮือกใหญ่ก่อนจะสถบกับตัวเองอย่างเบาๆว่า
"แกยังรับไม่ได้อีกหรอ....ตรรกะ" และเขาก็เดินออกไปจากห้องอย่างเหนื่อยล้า
